Language is an integral part of the social identity and ethnicity of a group. To preserve a
social group’s or tribe’s cultural identity it is essential to help them preserve their language.UGC’s present initiative to offer ‘support grant for study and research in Indigenous and Endangered Languages’ ‘to enable State Universities to pay a greater attention to the marginal languages, non -scheduled languages, languages of tribal and nomadic communities and the languages that deserve a measure of social sympathy and academic attention.’ is expected not only to be academically significant but also important in promoting social justice.
