CALL FOR APPLICATIONS : INTERN POSITION AT  Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.(Social Sciences)

ESCAP provides opportunities for students enrolled in graduate school/PhD programme, students enrolled in the final year of a first university degree, students having graduated with a university degree less than one year ago to undertake an internship with one of its diverse range of divisions and agencies, most of which are located at its Bangkok headquarters.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Sustainable Demographic Transition Section.

The Social Development Division consists of three sections namely:

  • Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS);
  • Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation Section (SETS) and
  • Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS), covering the thematic areas of inequality and social protection, population dynamics, ageing, migration, gender equality, disability and youth.
  • The Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS) monitors and analyses trends and formulates policy options to address population and development issues of concern to Asian and Pacific Member States, including ageing, international migration and youth.



DEADLINE: 25 July, 2018.


Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Undertaking literature reviews and compiling data from secondary sources on: population trends and demographic changes and their implications on sustainable development; international migration; population ageing and its impact on sustainable development, including access to social protection for older persons and the rights of older persons; and engaging youth in implementing the 2030 Agenda.
  • Assisting in organizing meetings, including attending to all relevant preparations.
  • Reviewing working papers and reports for accuracy and clarity.
  • Developing audio-visual materials to communicate policy messages to non-technical audiences.
  • Performing other duties as might be assigned by staff concerned and/or the Chief of Section.

Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views.
  • Studies in social science, economics or other relevant areas required.


  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, particularly Russian, is desirable.
