Legal Aid Services,West Bengal

WHERE: Kolkata

ABOUT: Legal Aid Services, West Bengal (LASWEB), one of the pioneering legal aid offering civil society organizations in India, empowers the poor and the disadvantaged with varied legal entitlements. Functioning since 1980 as an organic collective of retired judges, practising lawyers and social activists, we have been providing free legal aid, including litigational support and legal literacy, to a wide range of sufferers. The decision to form a non-political and state-level non-governmental organization to serve the cause of legal aid for the poor and vulnerable sections in West Bengal was taken in a convention of intellectuals held in Kolkata on the 12th of September 1980. Beginning with release of non-criminal lunatics from prisons and fighting for prisoners’ rights and custodial justice, we have come a long way. Sitting judges of various high courts, judicial officers serving in the district courts, civil servants and police personnel have always added value to our awareness and advocacy initiatives.

Realizing the Goal of Water for Life: Lessons from Around the World

WHERE: NLU, DELHI

During the twentieth century, the world’s population tripled and the use of water resources grew six-fold.
Anticipated future population growth, coupled with increasing industrialization and urbanization, will result
in an even greater demand for clean water – threatening serious consequences for humans and their
environment.
Access to clean water is a pre-requisite to the realization of all other human rights. Yet, according to the
UN, thirty-one countries are now facing water scarcity, and almost one billion people lack access to clean
drinking water. By 2025, this lack of access is expected to affect two-thirds of the world’s population.
At this conference, international speakers from a variety of disciplines will provide insight into water issues
and share lessons from around the world with the conference community. The two broad themes identified
for the conference are:
– Transboundary water conflicts
– Access to clean water

Academicians, lawyers, activists, bureaucrats and all others working on issues relating to  access to water and transboundary conflicts are invited to attend the conference.
Please contact the following with any queries about the conference:
