Certificate Course on Environmental Lawyering @NUJS, Kolkata

DESCRIPTION:  Workshop-cum-crash course on Environmental Lawyering – learning to differentiate between the practical and theoretical aspects of Environmental Law that we read in Law Schools. We aim to bridge the gap between the law we learn in law schools (which is frankly nowhere near what happens at the ground level!), the law as it plays out in people’s lives and the space where lawyers fit in the social, political and cultural milieu that characterizes “the field”. Unlearning the learnt!

NUJS Environmental Law Essay Competition 2013

THEME: There are three specific themes on which the Essay will be based on:

  1. A Critique of The Biodiversity Act, 2002: Legal Loopholes and Suggestions
  2. Environment Impact Assessment: Do we really need a shift from EIA?
  3. Implementation of the Forest Act, 2006 in Tiger Reserves: An interplay between the Indian Forests Act, 1927 and the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 in areas declared to be critical habitats for tigers

Global Development Awards and Competition 2012

THEME: Inequality, Social Protection and Inclusive Growth

A. Japanese Award for the most Innovative Development Project (MIDP) – MIDP is a competitive grant program that provides development practitioners with the opportunity to compete for grants worth US$ 45,000 to help scale up their innovative project. The grants are awarded to projects and/or non-governmental organizations that are supporting improved service delivery, in particular, innovative approaches and meet certain set criteria. These projects are not theme based. However, the projects need to contribute to sustainable development.

  • First Prize – US$ 30,000
  • Second Prize – US$ 10,000
  • Third Prize – US$ 5,000

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Open to all development projects being implemented in low income countries and low middle income countries in Africa, Asia, Commonwealth of Independent States, Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean, Pacific Islands, and the transition economies of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
  • Project must be managed by a non-governmental organization with its headquarters in a country in one of the above regions.
  • Project must have started before 1 January, 2012.
  • Applicants from previous years (except winners) may reapply, but they must update the application to include new aspects of the project.
  • Past winners are not eligible to apply.

B. Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Develpoment (ORD) – ORD is awarded to an organization/researcher(s) whose proposal to conduct research on any one of the themes holds the greatest promise for improving our understanding of the relevant development issues and puts forth clear, articulate and well researched policy implications to address these development problems.

Municipalika 2013 Urban Innovation Challenge

ABOUT MUNICIPALIKA: Municipalika 2013 is the 11th international Conference and Exhibition on Good Urban Governance for Safe, Healthy, Green, Inclusive and Smart Cities, with the participation of all stake holders dealing with urban development, management and governance.

Teams of students will be required to develop solutions and present a paper which may include drawings, site plans, tables etc. The top four entries will be included in the Conference Papers volume of Municipalika 2013 and will also win cash prizes. SOLUTION AREAS: Solutions are mainly sought for the following areas –

  1. MACRO (Sustainable Cities and Townships) – This includes urban planning, sustainable inter and intra-city mobility, application of GIS/GPS for effective e-governance, energy efficiency, urban supply chains, pedestrian centric experiences, public accessibility, equitable distribution of resources, slum free and inclusive design, supply-side and demand-side management, energy generation and water supply, sanitation, rainwater harvesting, waste water management including urban waste and e-waste management, and recycling at the urban scale.
  2. MICRO (Green Buildings and Habitats) – Solutions could exemplify excellence, innovation and technological advances in passive and active design, inclusive design, affordable housing, ergonomics and behavioral sciences influencing sustainable practices, energy efficiency, building management systems, energy generation, water efficiency, rainwater harvesting, waste water management, waste segregation and management and recycling at the building level.

Any of the above topics can be chosen and ideas for the same can be elaborated.

FORMAT OF SUBMISSION: Entries should identify specific problem areas from among the given heads and suggest innovative ideas, solutions and strategies. Capture the same in a maximum of 5 graphical scale frames or 6 A4 sheeets or 4 A3 – all formats not containing more than 1000 words. The acceptable format for submission is pdf.

Mock Green Tribunal:

  • Participants will be divided into teams to work as the petitioners, defendants, and judges of the tribunal on a hypothetical dispute based on environmental regulation relating to nuclear safety and liability.
  • Participants will get 20 minutes preparation time before they are asked to present arguments.

Mock Conference of Parties of Convention on Biodiversity:

  • Participants will represent different countries and other interest groups in the setting of the Conference, based on allocation done prior to the workshop.
  • Participants will be required to submit position papers based on the agenda circulated by the organizers. Based on the demands raised during the session, participants will also be asked to work on a draft report to finalize the outcome of the Conference. Based on their performance, one of the participants of the workshop shall be adjudged “The Best Delegate”.

  • Non-NUJS students: Rs. 500/-
  • NUJS students: Rs. 250/-

Accommodation and food for the duration of the workshop will be covered by the organizers.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

3. Manuscripts should be submitted in Garamond , with font size 12, line spacing 1.5’; justified, with sufficient margins of  1.5” to the left and 1.0” on all sides.

5. Each Manuscript should contain:

  • Suggested Keywords up to 10 words
  • Abstract of 100-150 words
  • Citation: End notes, but not footnotes, may be used if necessary and should be signaled by superscript numbers in the main text and listed at the end of the text before the references. The citation format to be used is Chicago Manual, 15th Edition, while for legal citation the Harvard Bluebook style of Citation, 19th Edition.
  • Tables: tables should be supplied separately from the text in Microsoft Word and their position indicated in the text. All tables should have short descriptive captions with footnotes and their source(s) typed below the tables.
  • Illustrations: all line diagrams and photographs are termed ‘Figures’ and should be referred to as such in the Manuscript. They should be numbered consecutively. Line diagrams should be presented in a form suitable for immediate reproduction (i.e. not requiring redrawing), each on a separate A4 sheet or separate file. They should be reproducible.
  • Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions from copyright holders for reproducing any illustrations, tables, figures or lengthy quotations previously published elsewhere. Permission letters must be supplied to Editorial Board.

IMPORTANT DATES: The GJLDP accepts Manuscript for publication on a rolling base. Manuscript accepted can take up to six months or even more to be published in the Journal. Papers with immediate relevance would be considered for early publication. This is matter of editorial judgement.

October shall be the deadline for January issue, and April for July issue.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Entire paper must be in MS Word Document Format using Times New Roman Font with Font size 12, 1.5 inch line spacing and 1 inch margin all around the page.
  • Length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages.
