Fund Internship Program (FIP)@https://www.imf.org

IMF Recruitment

Fund Internship Program (FIP)

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION UPDATE: Our review of applications is now completed. Successful candidates will be contacted by the end of March/first week in April.

The Fund Internship Program (FIP) is the main internship offered at the Fund. It provides an opportunity for highly promising graduate students pursuing Ph.D degrees in macroeconomics (or fields related to the IMF’s core work) to gain a better understanding of the IMF’s work and contribute to the IMF’s mission. Candidates undertaking Master’s degrees in macroeconomics or related fields may also be considered. Other opportunities for internships in other careers are available, but their frequency and availability is limited. These opportunities are advertised periodically online in Current Vacancies or through university career development offices. The Fund also offers an internship in its Legal Department.

Next Internship Session Application Period
June to October, 2017 December 15, 2016 – January 16, 2017

Program Overview

Internships are offered to about 50 students each year and are undertaken during the summer between June and October.

During the 10 to 12-week period, interns work under the supervision of experienced colleagues to carry out a research project and prepare a paper. Papers may be presented to staff in the department at the end of the internship assignment, and papers of high standard may be published internally.

Projects assigned to interns differ from year-to-year depending on the departments’ work program. Research covers a broad spectrum of economic issues, as evidenced by the following topics addressed in 2016:

  • Impact of commodity price shocks on financial stability in developing countries.
  • Explore possible non-linear effects of oil price shocks on growth (the case of Kazakhstan).
  • Spillover effects of ECB unconventional monetary polies.
  • Systemic risk amplifiers for stress testing based on inferred networks.
  • Debt sustainability, capacity to repay and other risk assessments.
  • Productivity and volatility in Europe/Euro Area.
  • Financing costs in sub-Saharan Africa—Overshooting or fundamentals?
  • Trade Integration in Latin America
  • Macroeconomic and structural policies and gender inequality.

The IMF’s Legal Department is also seeking applications for a summer intern position as part of the 2017 Fund Internship Program. The duration of the internship will be 10-12 weeks, which will be undertaken sometime between May and October 2017 (the actual period of the internship will be agreed between the department and the successful candidate).

The selected candidate will work in one of the units of the Legal Department under the supervision and guidance of a senior member of the unit. Projects assigned (which differ from year to year) will be determined at a time closer to the start of the internship to ensure that they are directly aligned with the department’s work program and, to the extent possible, with the interests of the intern. Research covers a broad spectrum of legal issues as the examples below from previous years illustrate:

  • Analysis of the legal framework for capital controls under the European Economic Area
  • Research on the insolvency of non-bank financial institutions
  • Research on the legal mandate of the IMF in financial regulation
  • Cross-country comparisons of effectiveness of AML/CFT efforts

Who Should Apply

To be eligible for the FIP, candidates must meet the following criteria:

PhD students

  • Must be within one or two years of completing a Ph.D. in Macroeconomics or a related field and be in student status (i.e. must be returning to university after the internship. Typically, internships are sought by those who are interested in the IMF’s Economist Program following graduation.
  • Be below the age of 32 at the commencement of the internship
  • Have an excellent command of English, written and oral.

  • Possess strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills.

International Conference On Combating Human Trafficking: With Special Reference to Women and Children

13th -15th February, 2015

Venue: Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, India

CAMPUS LAW CENTRE, UNIVESITY OF DELHI

The Campus Law Centre  (CLC) organised an International Conference in April, 2014, which witnessed the world wide participation from countries including Singapore, Italy, China, Indonesia, Mauritius, Nigeria, U.K , South Korea, Maldives, Bangladesh,  Iran and Nepal. Inspired by the success of 2014 Conference, CLC proposes to hold , in 2015, an International Conference on Human Trafficking.

The Campus Law Centre,  University of Delhi offering three year law degree, having a multi-cultural and multi-lingual student- body, is rated as one of the best law schools not only in India, but also in Asia. It is a deep rooted legal institution of par excellence having glorious past of 90 years and a bright future ahead. Responding to new developments in legal education, it keeps introducing new subjects and concepts to professionally designed courses of study to make it more socially relevant. Thus, it is not only maintaining the existing high standards of legal education, but is also raising it to further heights. Qualitative teaching, moot-court competitions, campus placements, legal- aid services, regular discussions, and illustrious alumni are some of the features which have established CLC as a Centre of Excellence.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Human trafficking, unfortunately, is the fastest growing means by which people are enslaved, and one of the  fastest growing international organized crime. Approximately 80 per cent of human trafficking is women and girls and up to 50% are minors.

In 1904, the International Agreement for the Suppression of “White Slave Traffic” was signed and put into action. The purpose of this agreement was to protect women, young and old, from being involved in “White Slave Traffic.” After the First World War, the League of Nations focused on international issues and the Suppression of “White Slave Traffic” was changed to “Traffic in Women and Children” so that everyone was included with no discrimination to race. The children of both genders were also recognized as victims of trafficking. In 1932, during World War II, Japan had set up a horrifying and outrageous system known as “comfort stations” where women all across Asia were forced into sexual slavery.

In 1995, the United Nations’s  Fourth World Conference on Women at Beijing addressed the issue of trafficking of women. In this Conference, trafficking was  recognized as an act of violence against women, and the concept of trafficking was further defined . In 2011, US President, Obama declared the month of January to be Human Trafficking Awareness month, and named January 11, 2011 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

The first step by the United Nations to combat trafficking was the Protocol to “Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children”, and was implemented on December 25, 2003. It is the only international legal instrument addressing human trafficking as a crime. Thereafter, many continents and countries have enacted laws against human trafficking, but these laws are often vague in terms of what a country considers exploitation. Thus, the obstacles include a lack of monitoring, inadequate training, and a lack of coordination between anti-trafficking measures and the authorities.

In November 2004, the ASEAN Declaration against Trafficking in Persons Particularly Women and Children was adopted which reaffirmed the Ha Noi Declaration of 1998 and the Ha Noi Plan of Action. After the 2004 ASEAN Declaration Against Trafficking,  numerous  MOUs were signed amongst the ASEAN nations viz. MOU between Lao PDR and Vietnam ; between Cambodia and Thailand ; between Lao PDR and Thailand; between Myanmar and Thailand; between Cambodia and Vietnam;  between Thai and Vietnam; between Myanmar and China, etc. However, despite all legal steps and agreements the organised transnational crime of trafficking continued and is presently the second largest organised crime. In May, 2005, the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings was adopted, and came into force on 1st February, 2008. As of April, 2014, the Convention has been ratified by 42 of Council of Europe.

In India, thousands of Indians are trafficked everyday to some destination or the other and are forced to lead lives of slavery. They survive in brothels, factories, guesthouses, dance bars, farms and even in the homes of well-off Indians, with no control over their bodies and lives. Besides, Article 23 of the Constitution of India which prohibits traffic in human beings and other similar forms of forced labour (a fundamental right granted to  citizens of India), the Government of India has enacted in 1956 the Suppression of Immoral Traffic in Women and Girls Act  (SITA) and renamed in 1986 as the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (ITPA). Various other central laws of the country also contain provisions in this regard.

Despite all round efforts-international, regional and domestic, is unable to alleviate this woes of modern slavery particularly the woes of women and children. The poor countries owing to its poverty and poor economic status among the improvised sections of the society can be easily targeted with no defence against this organised crime. Law as a tool of social engineering has the force to alleviate this organised crime against society and humanity. Thus, it necessitates consideration of the progress and effect of various agreements, conventions, MOUs, law, policies and statutes at various levels: international, regional and domestic.

Against this backdrop, Campus Law Centre, university of Delhi, a premier legal institution takes pride in organizing three day International Conference on “Combating Human Trafficking : With Special Reference to Women and Children ”. It will offer a unique opportunity to the academia, NGOs and policy makers to deliberate upon the issues to be discussed over there. The international and national experts are invited to deliberate upon legal and policy matters related to of monitoring, inadequate training, lack of coordination between anti-trafficking measures and the authorities, enforcement: investigation, enforcement: prosecution, public awareness, victim services and Research, technical cooperation among countries and international law enforcement agencies, etc.

International conference on the sociology of elites in contemporary India

Elites can be broadly defined as “those who have vastly disproportionate control over or access to a resource”[1]. The study of this privileged fraction of society currently experiences a revival that can partly be explained by the rising level of inequalities. The “Occupy Wall Street” movement of 2011 shed light on this renewed interest of scholars and activists, who make an extensive use of the latest researches produced by social scientists. More recently, the successs of Thomas Piketty’s book helped to shed light on the role this fraction of society plays in the production of inequalities. A whole body of quantitative and qualitative research has been produced by researchers over the last few years, including prosopographic studies of business leaders, Multiple Correspondence Analyses of the field of economic power, historical studies of the business elites, network analyses of corporate interlocks, qualitative studies of the formal and informal modes of sociability among the elite, ethnography of elite clubs, studies of conspicuous consumption, etc. From the early works of Vilfredo Pareto, Gaetano Mosca, Thorstein Veblen and C. Wright Mills to today’s researches, the sociology of elites can draw on a very rich and diverse body of works. Nonetheless, the scholarship on the elite in India is very limited. The well established traditions of studying social networks of the elite, their educational background, their biographies, their family life, their exclusive social clubs, their culture or their neighborhoods have not still been appropriated by scholars working on the Indian society and very few researchers are currently trying to fill this gap. This is all the more surprising as India is currently the World’s third economic power in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (and the 10th in terms of GDP nominal value). To give just one figure, according to the Wall Street Journal, in 2013, India had a total of 182,000 millionaires (in dollars)[2].

While political elite and the administrative elite have been the object of some major researches by political scientists, a purely sociological perspective is so far missing. Economic elite in particular have been left apart. Some scattered researches on the elite exist though, providing a small base upon which a more unified analysis of the Indian elite can be built.

First and foremost, the scholarship on caste – one of India’s most important social institutions – helps lay the foundations of a deeper analysis of the elite. The debates on caste and power, through an emphasis on the question “what is a dominant caste?”, can help identify various layers of “elite” groups. From one geographic space to another, from one State to another, from rural territories to urban areas, the caste systems tend to vary and, with them, the definition of how the privileged access to resources is legitimized on the basis of caste. From agrarian dominant castes to erudite brahmanical elites, from traditional business communities to the recent commercial successes of the Khatri community, the scholarship on caste makes it possible to identify various fractions of the elite divided along caste lines. In particular, the focus on the predominant role of caste among business communities led to the development of a very rich scholarship, even though these studies are often historical or based on a single community.

Studies on the business communities also often focus on the specificity of their family structure. The scholarship on family businesses in India is relatively developed and several other researches have looked at the very peculiar institutions of the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) and of the karta (manager of a joint family).

The elite schools and institutions as well as the biographical trajectories of the elite have been relatively understudied. Paradoxically, the Indian elite settled abroad almost seems to be the object of more research than is the desi elite. The studies on the India diaspora have indeed been extremely prolific over the last decade. More recently, a growing scholarship has developed focusing on a fraction of the upper-class that does not directly detain the means of production but that is extremely well endowed in terms of cultural capital and that has the monopoly of “merit”: the top corporate employees. In contrast, the fractions of the elite that actually detain the means of production have been the object of much less attention by scholars.
In terms of lifestyles of the elite, the literature is again limited. Several authors have worked on the “cultures of servitude” and the particular relationship the elite maintain with their domestic employees. Several other researches have tried to analyze particular territories of the elite like the mall, the condominium or the gated community. Unfortunately, these latter studies generally focus on the spaces themselves and the imaginaries they convey and often fail to directly investigate the representations of the members of the upper fractions of the elite.

Finally, one also need to mention a tradition of research grounded in the sociology of organizations or in management and business studies. We can thus mention a growing number of researches on the Corporate Social responsibility in the Indian corporate world. One can also mention studies on firm structures, family business groups and corporate governance in India. These studies present the advantage of offering a good view of the context in which business is conducted in India; but they often lack an in-depth analysis of the sociological dispositions of the actors evolving in this world.

This conference intends to bring together scholars conducting researches that could help develop a better understanding of the various privileged sections of the Indian society. As their actions, their choices, their ways of thinking, etc. have a major impact on the rest of society, it is indeed decisive to get a better sociological understanding of the lifestyles and the trajectories of the individuals who compose this group.

Papers addressing the following areas are particularly welcome:

–          The reconfiguration of regional and local elites
–          The interlocking of the economic, administrative and political elites
–          The drawing of symbolic boundaries between the competing fractions of the elite (corporate people vs business people, old money vs nouveaux riches, conservatives vs liberals, etc.)
–          The lifestyles of the elite (social clubs, leisure, cultural practices, traveling, etc.)
–          The social capital and the networks of the elite
–          The territories of the elite
–          The pathways to the elite (trajectories, educational institutions, reproduction of privileges)
–          Methodological issues: “studying up” in the Indian context, defining the elite, etc.
–          The business elite and its intermediaries: chartered accountants, consultants, brokers, equity analysts, etc.
–          Caste and the elite

Papers are expected to be empirically grounded and proposals should include:

1° the title of the paper
2° the author(s), their institutional affiliation, phone number and e-mail address
3° a brief summary of the paper, including the research problem, the main substantive argument and details about the material and the methodology mobilized in the paper (not more than 700 words).

Abstract proposals are due April 1st, 2015 and should be submitted to sociologyofindianelites@gmail.com. We will notify the authors of accepted abstracts by June 1st, 2015. Full papers of accepted abstracts are due on December 1st, 2015. Participants will be responsible for covering their own travel expenses.

Women, Labour and Livelihoods in 21st century India: a research and policy linkage workshop

11th and 12th December 2014

Co-organized by the University of Melbourne, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, and Centurion University

Notwithstanding the high rates of economic growth in the Indian economy over the past decade and ostensibly increased employment opportunities, only 15 per cent of all women in India are engaged in paid work, whether this is in the formal or informal sector[1]. The corollary implication is that 85 per cent of Indian women are engaged in forms of unpaid family labour within the home, farm or family-based enterprise that in effect situates them in relationships of dependency[2]. The benefits of India’s economic growth and its ‘demographic dividend’ will continue to elude young women if Indian policy interventions are not convergent with insights from research on women’s livelihoods, labour, skills and employment. Gender, as other social relationships (such as caste, age) is a crucial mediator of livelihoods and employment in a deeply stratified country such as India, and gendered identities inevitably influence outcomes of managed interventions such as programmes and policies for skills training or women’s self-employment.

This proposed 2 day workshop seeks to bring together an inter-disciplinary group of researchers, development practitioners and policy influencers who work on issues of urban and rural women’s labour, livelihoods and employment in India. The aim of the workshop is to engage in a discussion on how better linkages between research and policy can shape improved economic outcomes, particularly for poor women.

The workshop envisages a dialogue between academics and practitioners. We therefore invite both full length academic papers as well as presentations by practitioners. Selected papers from the workshop and highlights of workshop discussions will be edited for publication.

We invite workshop papers and presentations that focus on analyses of:
Workforce participation levels
– The patterns of women’s entry and exit in labour markets and what this reveals of their livelihood strategies and response to economic opportunity
Renegotiation of gendered roles
– How gendered responsibilities for social reproduction are re-negotiated and re-shaped as young women engage in new opportunities for livelihoods or employment
– The choices and constraints that young women face, especially in terms of gender relations within the household and other dimensions of marginalized identity (such as caste, ethnicity, sexuality and religion), as well as the societal backlash when they assert themselves through being mobile, seeking opportunities and challenging gendered social expectations.
Women in low-paid and corrosive work
– Strategies to counter the sequestration of women in unpaid, poorly waged and/or precarious labour
– Strategies to break the downward economic spiral faced by rural poor women with the ongoing agrarian crisis and the feminisation of agriculture

The impact of skills and collective capacity building interventions
– The influence of government and non-government initiatives to build collective capacity among women in improving economic outcomes
– The scope for policies and institutions such as the National Rural Livelihoods Mission and the National Skills Development Corporation to play a transformative social and economic role.
