Fund Internship Program (FIP)@https://www.imf.org

IMF Recruitment

Fund Internship Program (FIP)

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION UPDATE: Our review of applications is now completed. Successful candidates will be contacted by the end of March/first week in April.

The Fund Internship Program (FIP) is the main internship offered at the Fund. It provides an opportunity for highly promising graduate students pursuing Ph.D degrees in macroeconomics (or fields related to the IMF’s core work) to gain a better understanding of the IMF’s work and contribute to the IMF’s mission. Candidates undertaking Master’s degrees in macroeconomics or related fields may also be considered. Other opportunities for internships in other careers are available, but their frequency and availability is limited. These opportunities are advertised periodically online in Current Vacancies or through university career development offices. The Fund also offers an internship in its Legal Department.

Next Internship Session Application Period
June to October, 2017 December 15, 2016 – January 16, 2017

Program Overview

Internships are offered to about 50 students each year and are undertaken during the summer between June and October.

During the 10 to 12-week period, interns work under the supervision of experienced colleagues to carry out a research project and prepare a paper. Papers may be presented to staff in the department at the end of the internship assignment, and papers of high standard may be published internally.

Projects assigned to interns differ from year-to-year depending on the departments’ work program. Research covers a broad spectrum of economic issues, as evidenced by the following topics addressed in 2016:

  • Impact of commodity price shocks on financial stability in developing countries.
  • Explore possible non-linear effects of oil price shocks on growth (the case of Kazakhstan).
  • Spillover effects of ECB unconventional monetary polies.
  • Systemic risk amplifiers for stress testing based on inferred networks.
  • Debt sustainability, capacity to repay and other risk assessments.
  • Productivity and volatility in Europe/Euro Area.
  • Financing costs in sub-Saharan Africa—Overshooting or fundamentals?
  • Trade Integration in Latin America
  • Macroeconomic and structural policies and gender inequality.

The IMF’s Legal Department is also seeking applications for a summer intern position as part of the 2017 Fund Internship Program. The duration of the internship will be 10-12 weeks, which will be undertaken sometime between May and October 2017 (the actual period of the internship will be agreed between the department and the successful candidate).

The selected candidate will work in one of the units of the Legal Department under the supervision and guidance of a senior member of the unit. Projects assigned (which differ from year to year) will be determined at a time closer to the start of the internship to ensure that they are directly aligned with the department’s work program and, to the extent possible, with the interests of the intern. Research covers a broad spectrum of legal issues as the examples below from previous years illustrate:

  • Analysis of the legal framework for capital controls under the European Economic Area
  • Research on the insolvency of non-bank financial institutions
  • Research on the legal mandate of the IMF in financial regulation
  • Cross-country comparisons of effectiveness of AML/CFT efforts

Who Should Apply

To be eligible for the FIP, candidates must meet the following criteria:

PhD students

  • Must be within one or two years of completing a Ph.D. in Macroeconomics or a related field and be in student status (i.e. must be returning to university after the internship. Typically, internships are sought by those who are interested in the IMF’s Economist Program following graduation.
  • Be below the age of 32 at the commencement of the internship
  • Have an excellent command of English, written and oral.

  • Possess strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills.

Master’s degree students

  • Must be in student status at the commencement of internship (not yet graduated).
  • Be below the age of 28 at the commencement of the internship.
  • Have an excellent command of English, written and oral.
  • Possess strong analytical, quantitative and computer skills

For the Legal Department Internship: candidates must be within one or two years of completing an LLM, J.D, or equivalent advanced degree in law and below the age of 32. While the selection process is highly competitive, candidates with diverse academic or cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Salary & Benefits

IMF interns receive:

  • A competitive salary;
  • Round-trip economy class air travel to Washington, D.C. from their university; and
  • Limited medical insurance coverage.

Jobs @ YP Foundation

The YP Foundation is Hiring!

10 things you should know about working with YP Foundation.

1. Some places are not run-of-the-mill jobs. They are places to learn, challenge yourself, be blown away by people’s abilities to innovate and grow. TYPF is a way of life, in a happy, intense, meet-people-who-will-change-your-life kind of way. Ask anyone who has been here. Here’s what defines us:

2. One Team: We always think ‘we’ instead of ‘me’. Where else do you have colleagues that’ll drop everything in a second to help you with the thing you’re struggling with? We believe in collaborative growth where your own only competition is you and there are enough opportunities to travel, learn, grow and discover to go around for everyone. Where you inherit other people’s ideas and then get supported to enable your own.

3. Complete OwnershipTYPF, regardless of age gives young people the reigns to lead one’s own programme. This organization really does invest in its staff. Where else will you find non profit organizations where 19 year olds lead programmes and are trusted to do so?

4. Transparency: There’s nothing to hide at The YP. If you want to know something, just ask.

5. Radical Growth and Learning:  Such places are not always easy places to work in, in that they ask a lot of you. Your ideas, your knowledge, your willingness to un-learn, your time and your abilities to work with other people. Its a commitment that runs both ways, yours and ours.

6. The Journey, Not the Destination:  TYPF is not a place where you park your bags and camp, but a place you stretch yourself to try and crystalize the wildest of social change ideas into on-the-ground realities. At some point in your journey, we recognize that for some people it’s time to leave and hand over and we will encourage you to go on to the next fabulous part of your career. For others, TYPF takes care of the people it keeps on. Our staff have been with us from anywhere between the past 3-12 years.

7. A Place for Institutional Misfits: A place where people are fun to work with, feminist, passionate, where your voice has value and you are respected. Where you are judged on your hard work, sense of humour and commitment to get things done. We believe in thinking outside the box and are always willing to try out new ideas.

8. The Un-Patriarchal Family: TYPF is notoriously known for meeting amazing people who become like-family. We believe in plurality, diversity and respect diverse forms of identity and leadership. We don’t discriminate on the basis of your disability, HIV status, gender, caste, religion or sexual orientation. You are encouraged to challenge the status quo.

9. Being Resourceful: TYPF is a place where just when you think you’re getting complacent, something organic and unexpected is likely to take you down a whole new rabbit hole. Other then an unlimited supply of tea, coffee and internet, we believe in finding sustainable, cost effective ways of getting work done.

10. Self Care and the Individual: It isn’t just about the work, or being an expert at it. People at TYPF are the most precious resource we have and no one here goes ignored or unnoticed. TYPF provides 51 days of leave in a year and we encourage people to take time to take care of themselves.

retreat21B.jpg

We Are Growing!

TYPF is currently looking at expanding its programmes and outreach and are specifically looking for experienced professionals and practitioners who can commit to lead, implement and build a long-term vision. We are currently a team of 14 staff members who work both part time and full time, with an active volunteer base of over 160 people each year. Read more about our Staff and Board Members here and here.

Not every kind of person fits into a place like this, but if you’re looking for a serious challenge to stretch your wings and roots, are passionate about working with and for young people or you know someone who is – apply!

Advocacy Internship Programme

What is the programme?

ADVOCACY INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (AIP) is a unique venture of the National Centre for Advocacy Studies. Inaugurated in 1999, the AIP aims at developing a set of dedicated and active youth committed to social change and justice. It is a programme that caters to the needs of social activism and enriches participants with a political perspective, knowledge base, and skills required for effective people-centred advocacy. It is designed to prepare young people to work in the field of development and social change through an 18-month process of learning that combines academic inputs, capacity building, field experiences and perspective building

What does the programme involve?

The multidisciplinary course is designed to emphasize a rights-based perspective to social change, focusing on the concepts and practices of people-centred advocacy and human rights activism (rights of dalits and women; right to food, health and work). The topics covered include the character of Indian society, polity and economy; globalization and imperialism; human rights law and social justice; approaches to social change and social movements; environmental protection; policy analysis; campaign planning; networking; and research methodologies.

Within 5-6 years of the beginning of the programme, an Academic Council was formulated, to advise and guide the Advocacy Internship. Besides, a resource team comprising experts from diverse fields was formed to facilitate the Internship programme.

Advocacy Internship Programme in a current year would usually deal with two consecutive batches. One which has completed the in-house programme and is placed in an organization for 6 months and the second which is still undergoing the in-house programme within the organization. Under Internship, the interns also make three field visits to grassroots advocacy organizations to have hands-on-experience of social action and advocacy.

Who are the interns?

Criteria for selection of the interns included educational qualifications (preferably post-graduate level) and experience (about two years’ association with social action groups). Priority would be given to candidates from remote areas who have limited learning opportunities. However, moving beyond the realms of education and experience, potential candidates would attend a two-day residential camp to assess their attitudes, aptitude and motivation levels.

Hands-on learning

Each intern is placed with an advocacy organization for six months. During this period, apart from working as a part of that organization, they are expected to write a dissertation on the process of campaign within the context of advocacy and socio-political change.

The six-month placements have great impact on the interns, with them finding the experience inspiring, many even going through an inner transformation. They not only begin to understand how advocacy processes work in the field, but the skills they learn during their in-house training are practiced in the field.

In a constant endeavor to improvise the program, in 2006-07 sessions with a psychologist and councillor were introduced. These sessions, which focused on self awareness, self development and interpersonal relationships, were meant to help interns understand themselves better so they can change for the better and become more effective in their work.

The Advocacy Internship Programme has produced around 100 young advocates who are working in various positions in organizations from grassroots to INGOs.

Internship at Assam Centre for Rural Development (ACRD)

Where : Guwahati
ABOUT : With more than 400 million children below the age of 18 years, India can either boast of or grieve at being the country with the world’s largest child population. However, today, not every child in our country enjoys the benefit of a ‘normal childhood’. For many, each day is a struggle to live and lead a dignified life without parents, education or even proper shelter at times while many other children lead a life of comfort. It was to confront and change this inequality that the Assam State branch of the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) was set up in 1967. Affiliated to the parent national body of the ICCW at Delhi, the state branch has worked relentlessly to make the state a better place for children, especially those from the lesser privileged and vulnerable sections of the society and has been a beacon of hope. With various projects like shelter homes, crèches, adoption homes and psycho social support programs the council strives to work for the welfare of abandoned, orphaned, relinquished or poor children below the poverty line up to the age of 18 years.
