Each year Gates Cambridge offers c.80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The selection criteria are:

  • outstanding intellectual ability
  • reasons for choice of course
  • a commitment to improving the lives of others
  • leadership potential

There are at least 225 Scholars from c. 50 countries studying in Cambridge at any one time who pursue the full range of subjects available at the University and are spread across its departments and Colleges.

Funding

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.

Core components

  • the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate*
  • a maintenance allowance for a single student (£17,500 for 12 months at the 2020-21 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months) – for PhD scholars the award is for up to 4 years
  • one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
  • inbound visa costs & the cost of the Immigration Health Surcharge

* The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students; applicants should see the Graduate Studies prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities they must accept this and the Trust will not pay these fees.

Discretionary components

The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:

  • Academic development funding – from up to £500 to up to £2,000, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
  • Family allowance – up to £10,120 for a first child and up to £4,320 for a second child (2020-21 rate). No funding is provided for a partner.
  • Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee).
  • Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time
  • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties

Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship?

If you are receiving a salary from an employer or have another substantial scholarship, the Trust reserves the right to reduce or not pay the standard maintenance allowance. You should let the Trust know ASAP if you are awarded any funding towards your degree at Cambridge.

What is not covered?

Most costs are covered by the Scholarship but Gates Cambridge does not cover bench fees or the costs of scientific equipment or similar academic resources. The Trust expects such core course costs to be covered by the academic department at Cambridge.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program at Stanford University| Apply by October 14, 2020

One Cohort With Many Backgrounds

Your fellow Knight-Hennessy Scholars will join Stanford from colleges and universities throughout the world, from a wide array of disciplines and professional experiences, and with a breadth of background, belief, and aspiration. This is a multifaceted community united by your curiosity and intellectual vitality, shared potential for leadership, and your humility and kindness.

Graduate Students at Stanford

Nearly 3,000 compelling graduate students enroll at Stanford annually. Next year, up to 80 (growing to 100 over time) will be Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Knight-Hennessy Scholars span all seven schools at Stanford. If you become a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, you’ll be in good company.

All Knight-Hennessy Scholars have to apply to and be accepted by a graduate program at Stanford at the same time they apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Your graduate program will be your primary affiliation, and the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program will provide you with access to an additional community and opportunities tailored to scholars.

To be a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, you submit two applications:

We can select you as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar only if a graduate program admits you to Stanford. The graduate program, however, may admit you to Stanford even if you are not selected as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar.

Submitting Your Graduate Program Application

You should check each graduate program’s website for a sense of what it seeks in candidates. You must meet the requirements for admission to your home graduate program.

Review of Applications are done separately but in parallel

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program communicates regularly with each graduate program throughout the admission process to ensure that we are designating as Knight-Hennessy Scholars only those applicants who each program has determined are among its best.

We review your Knight-Hennessy Scholars application. The graduate program reviews your application to that program. These two reviews take place separately. After reviewing your Knight-Hennessy Scholars application, we share our review with your graduate program. That program also gives input to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program.

Mahindra Humanities Center Postdoctoral Fellowships, 2021-22| Apply by 6th November, 2020

DESCRIPTION

The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships in connection with the Center’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of migration and the humanities.

Migration plays as critical a role in the moral imagination of the humanities as it does in shaping the activist vision of humanitarianism and human rights. Too often, the humanities are summoned merely as witnesses whose primary aesthetic and moral values lie in their illustrative powers of empathy and evocation. Yet the intellectual formation of the humanities—their very conception of the nature of meaning, knowledge, and morals—is deeply resonant with the displacement of values and the revision of norms that shape narratives of migrant lives.

We welcome applications from scholars in all fields whose work innovatively engages with migration and the humanities. In addition to pursuing their own research projects, fellows will be core participants in the bi-weekly seminar meetings for both academic terms of the fellowship. Other participants will include faculty and graduate students from Harvard and other universities in the region, and occasional visiting speakers.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Fellows will receive stipends of $65,000, medical insurance, additional research support of $2,500, and (for those not already in residence in Greater Boston) $1,500 in moving expenses. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Harvard for the term of the fellowship.

ELIGIBILITY AND DEADLINE INFORMATION

Applicants for 2021-22 fellowships must have received a doctorate or terminal degree in or after May 2018. Applicants without a doctorate or terminal degree must demonstrate that they have completed all requirements for a terminal degree (i.e. dissertation defense) by August 1, 2021. International scholars outside the United States are appointed under either the J-1 visa (Research Scholar status) or F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training), depending on their circumstances. If awarded a fellowship, the term of appointment for international scholars is September 1, 2021-August 31, 2022. The Mahindra Center reserves the right to cancel awards if the recipient is unable to meet these conditions of completion and visa status.

The application deadline for applicants to submit their materials is November 6, 2020. The deadline for receipt of letters of recommendation is November 20, 2020.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please apply using our online application.

In addition to biographical and professional information, applicants are asked to submit:

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A statement of the research project (1,000-3,000 words) that provides a detailed description of what the applicant proposes to do during the fellowship year.
  • One chapter- or article-length writing sample (no longer than 40 pages).
  • Names and contact information of three referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when three letters have been received. Recommendations may be those included in the applicant’s placement dossier, but they must specifically address the proposed research project. Letters should be uploaded to the electronic application.

Please contact Candace Kang with questions about applying for a fellowship.

World Forum for democracy 2020: Call for initiatives

Our societies have been tested by unexpected global challenges in 2020, but all the while humanity’s greatest existential threat looms ever larger. Environmental damage and climate change have not gone away.

They are still poisoning our air, polluting our water, and killing animals and humans alike. Rising temperatures and sea levels are on course to render lands uninhabitable and force people from around the world to leave their homes and rebuild their lives. The time to act is now. Yet recent polling indicates the highest ever recorded levels of dissatisfaction and mistrust with democracy as a system of government.  Its response to a whole series of recent challenges – economic, pandemic, and indeed environmental – have disappointed millions of people. Many are questioning the capacity, competence and even legitimacy of democratic governance to address their greatest needs. The ambition of the 9th World Forum for Democracy is to propose and discuss differing answers to the question of what it really takes to get the job done when it comes to stopping and reversing the devastating damage done to our environment.

The World Forum for Democracy calls for expression of interests in presenting innovative initiatives aiming at solving environmental problems and enhancing democracy from all over the world.

Submissions should be made by answering the questionnaire in the appendix of the call for initiatives and sending it by 30 June 2020.

Friedrich Naumann Foundation SCHOLARSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

ABOUT:

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation (German: Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit) (FNF) is a German foundation for liberal politics, related to the Free Democratic Party. Established in 1958 by Theodor Heuss, the first president of the Federal Republic of Germany, it promotes individual freedom and liberalism. The Foundation follows the ideals of the Protestant theologian, Friedrich Naumann. At the beginning of the last century, Naumann was a leading German liberal thinker and politician. He resolutely backed the idea of civic education. Naumann believed that a functioning democracy needs politically informed and educated citizens. According to him, civic education is a prerequisite for political participation and thus for democracy. In this regard, the Foundation is an agent of organized liberalism. It promotes this through civic education, international political dialogues, and political counselling. The Foundation has numerous offices in Europe, Africa, America, and Asia. It also enjoys close links with Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP) and Liberal International (LI). While the Foundation’s activities in the field of civic education consist of seminars, conferences and publications aimed at promoting liberal values and principles, the international political dialogue program provides a discussion forum for a wide range of liberal issues. The Foundation’s counselling programs focus on candidates for political office, liberal political parties and other democratic organizations. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation, together with other foundations of different philosophical, political and ideological orientation and the non-political German National Academic Foundation, acts as an instrument for the promotion of excellence in German university education. This scholarship system is subsidised by the Federal Government of Germany. Currently, the foundation sponsors around 800 students, among those 175 PhD students (as of 2009 (German)). Awards are granted after a multi-stage selection process and are based on grades, letters of recommendation, personality and character, political and social commitment with a dedication to liberal values and interviews with staff and affiliates of the foundation. Around 20% of the scholarships are held by foreign students, studying at a university in Germany.

The winners of New Zealand Government Scholarship 2020-2021 will receive the following benefits:

  • New Zealand will sponsor their full tuition fees
  • living allowance (a stipend) of NZ$491 per week. This will help with a scholar’s basic living expenses, but it is not enough to cover the living costs of any family members

  • medical insurance when you are in New Zealand

  • travel insurance
  • travel home during your scholarship (We allow for one or two trips home, depending on the length of your scholarship)
  • help with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate students

Your education institution will organize your travel and look after you on arrival:

The International Students Office at your university or education institution will organize travel to your study location and your accommodation. They will also look after you on arrival in your study location. They can answer any questions you may have about your courses, financial allowances or payments.

Your study starts the year after you apply:

Each year, we conduct one round of scholarship applications for each country.

If you are successful, you will start your study in semester one in February or March of the following year. (The exception is when your study programme is only available from semester two.) Check the website of your education institution for the exact start dates for your courses. You must be available to start your study on time.

The international student office at your preferred education institution will make sure you arrive at your study location before your courses start. You will have to time for orientation and to settle into your new accommodation.

You must complete your study in New Zealand on time:

You must complete your study within the time period allocated by your education institution for your chosen academic programme.

New Zealand scholarship winners must comply with these conditions:

Scholars must meet all the conditions of a scholarship. Scholars could lose their academic scholarship if they fail to meet these conditions.

For example, all scholars must attend classes, complete compulsory assignments and sit all exams. All scholars must meet all the course requirements of their educational institution on time. Your education institution offers extra academic and personal support if a scholar asks for it.

Academic requirements for the New Zealand Government Scholarship:

Scholars agree to meet all of the academic requirements outlined in the Letter of Scholarship Offer and in the New Zealand Scholarships Policy Handbook. This includes attending all classes, completing all assessments that are compulsory course requirements, and sitting all exams. You are required to achieve satisfactory academic progress in accordance with the continuation criteria set by both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the academic institution.

Eligibility Requirements to apply for the New Zealand Government Scholarship:

To apply for a New Zealand Scholarship, you must meet all of the eligibility criteria. You can complete the online questionnaire below to confirm whether you can apply.

The Eligibility questionnaire will check in detail if you meet all of the eligibility criteria. The Eligibility questionnaire will check things such as:

1. Age Requirement:

To apply for a full New Zealand Scholarship, you must be 18 years old or older when you start your scholarship. This means if you are 17 years of age when you apply, you must have your 18th birthday before you start your scholarship in semester one.

Exception for Samoa: Applicants applying for the Samoa Foundation intake can be 17 years of age when they commence their scholarship. There is no upper age limit for applicants. This means if you are 18 and over, you can apply. However, we do prefer applicants who are under 40 years of age for New Zealand Scholarships for university or tertiary students.

2. Academic Requirement:

Successful scholarship applicants must meet both the academic entry requirements and the English language requirements determined by each education institution. Check you meet academic entry requirements and English language requirements

As part of the New Zealand Scholarships application process, you need to choose your preferred education institution and preferred courses. Scholarship applicants don’t need to apply for admission to their preferred education institutions and courses.

But scholarship applicants do need to check that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and the minimum level of English required for their courses.

Course entry requirements are set by your chosen education institution so you must check minimum entry requirements on their website before you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

Ph.D. applicants should look for a supervisor as soon as possible from an early stage, Ph.D. scholarship applicants should look for and email suitable Ph.D. supervisors at New Zealand universities. Ph.D. scholarship applicants who make it to the interview stage will need to provide evidence at the interview that they have either secured a supervisor or are in active discussions with a potential supervisor.

3. English Language Requirement:

You do not need to sit an English language test or provide English language test scores when you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

If we select you for the applicant shortlist during our scholarship selection process, then you will need to provide your English language test scores.

New Zealand Government Scholarship Council accepts test scores from these four English competency testing systems:

  1. IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) OR
  2. TOEFL (the Test of English as a Foreign Language) OR
  3. PTE Academic (the Pearson Test of English Academic) OR
  4. Cambridge Academic English (advanced).

If you have passed an IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) test to the required level during the last 12 months, then your university or education institution may accept these test scores.

If you do not have IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) test scores from the last 12 months, we will tell applicants on the shortlist, if and when they need to sit one of these English competency tests.

Exemption from English language test requirement: If you have already completed some of your previous qualifications in English, your preferred education institution may not require any IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) scores from you. This is the decision of your preferred university or education institution only. You should contact your preferred education institution for a final decision about whether you need to provide English test results.

Generally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:

  • an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0
  • a TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
  • an overall PTE Academic score of 58 with no communicative skills score less than 50
  • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 176 with no bands less than 169.

Generally, to study for an undergraduate qualification, you must have at least:

  • An overall IELTS score of 6.0 and no band less than 5.5
  • a TOEFL score of 80 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
  • an overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no communication skills, score less than 42
  • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 169 with no bands less than 162.

New Zealand Government Scholarship Council Sponsors your English Language Test Fee

English language testing takes place during the final stages of our scholarship selection process. Only applicants on our scholarship shortlist, need current IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Cambridge Academic English (advanced) test scores.

In most cases, shortlisted applicants will need to organize and pay for their own IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic tests. Shortlisted applicants will need to book a test with a company that does English language testing close to their location.

If you are on our applicants’ shortlist, you will need to book your IELTS or TOEFL testing as soon as possible. This is because the testing process can take several weeks.

You may lose the chance to get a New Zealand Scholarship if your English language testing application form is late or incomplete or inaccurate.

They will organize and pay for the IELTS test for shortlisted applicants from these countries:

  • Cambodia
  • Tonga
  • Fiji
  • Timor-Leste
  • Lao PDR
  • Myanmar
  • Nauru
  • Kiribati

Postgraduate scholarship applicants or applicants, who finished high school a few years ago, must have relevant work experience. When assessing New Zealand scholarship applications, they prefer applicants who want to study courses that align strongly with their current work experience. We prefer applicants who will continue working in their current job sector after they finish their scholarship.

In the interview, we will want to see emails between you and a suitable PhD supervisor, confirming that:

  1. your PhD research topic is viable, and
  2. they are willing to be your PhD supervisor.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that you look for and email suitable PhD supervisors as soon as possible.

It is to be noted with great importance that to be selected as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, one must apply separately to the Stanford graduate degree program he/she wishes to pursue in addition to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program. The candidate cannot be selected as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar if the department doesn’t admit him/her.

Therefore, the candidate should check each department’s website for a sense of what it seeks in candidates. For Knight-Hennessy Scholars, three areas are primarily looked at:

  1. Independence of Thought
  2. Purposeful Leadership
  3. Civic Mindset

The deadline for submitting the application is Wednesday, October 9, 2019.

Location: United States

Benefits:

The education of Knight-Hennessy Scholars is fully funded for any graduate degree at Stanford. During each of the first three years of graduate study, Knight-Hennessy Scholars receive:a fellowship applied directly to cover tuition (commensurate with standard departmental level of enrollment) and associated fees, and a stipend for living and academic expenses (such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses), and a travel stipend intended to cover an economy-class ticket for one annual trip to and from Stanford.

In addition to these Knight-Hennessy Scholars also may apply for supplemental funds to support academic endeavors (e.g. conference travel). If one engages in optional research projects during the summer, the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program can provide summer funding.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars pursuing positive impact through social entrepreneurship may be eligible to apply for seed funding.

Eligibilities:

Applications are encouraged from citizens of all countries. That’s natural since Knight-Hennessy Scholars are expected to have global impact.

One is eligible to apply to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program if he/she is applying to enroll in any full-time graduate degree program at Stanford (for example, but not limited to, DMA, Eng, JD, MA, MBA, MD, MFA, MS, or PhD) or if he/she plans on pursuing one of Stanford’s many joint and dual graduate degree options (for example, but not limited to, MD+PhD, JD+MA, MBA+MS)

One eligible to apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars if he/she applies during his/her final year of study for his/her first/bachelor’s degree or within five years of earning his/her first/bachelor’s degree. For the cohort that applies in 2019, that means one must have graduated in January 2014 through September 2020 to enroll at Stanford in September 2020

If the applicant is still in college studying for his/her first/bachelor’s degree, he/she is eligible to apply as long as he/she completes his/her first/bachelor’s degree before he/she enrolls as a graduate student at Stanford.

If the applicant has earned a graduate degree, he/she remains eligible to apply in 2019 as long as he/she earned his/her first/bachelor’s degree in 2014 or later.

ABOUT US:

This scholarship is available to Indian students who apply to take an MPhil in a subject within the field of Social Sciences or an LLM degree.

The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation  was established in 1991, to realize the vision of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He dreamed of a modern India, secular, independent and progressive; a country that enshrines the democratic principle of equality, and blends progress with rich cultural traditions. He imagined a country with an educated people free of prejudice, where women participate as equals; a nation with the space and will to empower all citizens, and especially the underprivileged.

The Foundation works with the Cambridge Trust to offer the Rajiv Gandhi Cambridge Scholarship, for Indian students taking an MPhil in a subject within the field of Social Sciences or an LLM degree.
