Webinar on “International Humanitarian Law: Contemporary Issues Challenges” ( 19th September 2020)

Organised by: All India Law Teachers Congress

                                                             & Knowledge Steez

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in modern times is being continuously challenged by the changing nature of contemporary armed conflict. A wide array of new technologies has entered the modern battlefield. Cyberspace has opened up a potentially new war-fighting domain. Remote controlled weapon systems such as drones are increasingly being used by the parties to armed conflicts.

Drones and Automated weapons systems are also on the rise and certain autonomous systems such as combat robots are being considered for future use in the battlefield. There can be no doubt that IHL applies to these new weapons and the employment of new technology in warfare. However, these new means and methods of warfare pose legal and practical challenges in terms of ensuring their compliance with existing IHL norms, and also that due regard is given to the foreseeable humanitarian impact of their use. In recent times we have seen various drones attack taking lives of prominent politicians and military heads. Thus this webinar aims to initiate discussions on contemporary challenges and prevailing scope of IHL on realities of modern warfare and its impact on protection of victims of armed conflicts. The webinar will also discuss the challenges faced in IHL because of technological advances and challenges due to the change of nature of modern warfare.

Webinar on Gauging The Response Of International Health Law To Covid Crisis on 25 July,2020.(12P.M.)

About the Webinar:

Marwadi University and Weeramantary Centre For Peace , Justice and International Law Organises Webinar on Gauging The Response Of International Health Law To Covid Crisis.

COVID-19 has brought the debate concerning the role of international health regulations at the centre stage. While there are varied issues such as accessibility to healthcare, affordability and consolidating the operating procedures to deal with a disease, equity has emerged as one of the major concerns in recent times. The interface between law and science is another critical area where more attention is an urgent requirement. Engaging with these areas is indispensable now because the line between jurisdictional responses and international health regulations is becoming very thin.

The webinar thus seeks to explore the scenario through roping in voices from major organisations like the World Health Organisation and the Third World Network.

Manupatra webinar on Technical Competency as Duty of Care for Clients – A Legal Perspective

Technology is changing the legal culture and what it means to be a lawyer.”

Lawyer qualms about technology reflect the industry’s ongoing transition from a lawyer-centric, labor-intensive guild to an interdisciplinary, tech and process-enabled competitive marketplace.Technology has become a constant collaborator in legal delivery.

In 2012, the ABA formally approved a change to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct to make it clear that lawyers have a duty to be competent not only in the law and its practice, but also in technology.

The webinar will cover the following aspects:

  • What is technical competency?
  • Understand the meaning and scope of the duty of technical competence.
  • Why is technical competence considered a part of professional competence
  • How technical competence affects the legal practice?
  • Perspectives from legal regulators and global legal professional organisations (International Bar Association; American Bar Association)
