Call for Papers: DROIT PENALE: Indian Law Journal on Crime & Crimnology, Vol:1, Issue:2

ABOUT US

The term Droit Penale literally means criminal law. It has a French origin and deals with the various facets of crime and criminology. As a huge field of academic study, Criminology tends to cover criminal law and jurisprudence apart from dealing with crimes and criminal and socially deviant behavior of criminals. The ILJCC, a student-friendly law journal, has emerged bearing the idea to capitulate an exhaustive approach towards all these fields. Certificate Course: Economic Analysis of Regulation, [March 6, 2017 to March 10, 2017]

The Centre for Law & Economics is

organizing a Certificate Course on Economic Analysis of Regulation.
About the Course:

After the last economic crisis, calls for more “regulation”, especially in financial markets, were widespread both at the national and the international level. To avoid the occurrence of such crisis, it is argued that more regulations are required. Regulations are indeed tools to shape economic systems. As such, they have tremendous impacts on economic growth and the well-being of population. If the content of regulations is to be known when strategies are considered, it is especially crucial for both lawyers and policy makers to understand the foundations of these regulations. For lawyers, it helps to develop innovative interpretations and powerful arguments; for policy makers to understand the consequences and the inherent limits of their actions while also providing tools to apprehend and criticize existing regulations. This course will inquire into the reasons for regulations, the options that are available when a regulation is considered, their limits and the strategies to deal with them.

The course will cover one week, and it starts from Monday, March 6, 2017 & ends on Friday, March 10, 2017

Tentative Course Content

:
Lecture 1: Why should we regulate?
Lecture 2: Regulatory strategies (I): CAC and economic incentives.

Summer School: NAYI DISHAYEIN on Deconstructing Development

Background
‘Development’ is the defining agenda of our times. All that goes on in its name receives an uncritical nod from citizens as diverse as the ‘savvy metropolitan’ to the ‘struggling villager’. Political parties are increasingly using it as the most effective rhetoric to win elections. Meanwhile, as a country, we continue to grapple with issues of poverty, inequality, marginalisation and conflict, and fail to understand why this ‘development’, which is the promised solution, is increasingly becoming problematic.
About the Summer School: Sambhaavnaa Institute, has for the last five years been organising a participatory, reflective and experiential program series, called Nayi Dishayein. In this program we work with young participants to:

Deconstruct, i.e., critically examine the notion of development
Re-examine our belief systems, worldviews and privileges around power structures of caste, gender, religion, class
Assess possibilities of change through exposure to a range of contemporary interventions/initiatives/movements towards a just society

Position: One full-time Clinical Psychologist as Associate (Research) on contract to work with the Centre on the Death Penalty (‘Centre’) on the Mental Health Research Project.

About the Centre: The Centre is established under the aegis of the National Law University Delhi and was set up in August 2014 to undertake litigation, research and engage with stakeholders on issues related to the death penalty. The aim of the research we undertake is to generate information, through empirical and doctrinal studies, on issues affecting prisoners sentenced to death in India, analyse the developing jurisprudence on the death penalty in India and other jurisdictions, and undertake comparative research to add to the current understanding and debate around the death penalty.

The Mental Health Research Project: The Centre, in collaboration with two professors of Psychiatry, Dr. Pratima Murthy, and Dr. Sanjeev Jain and an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology, Dr. Gitanjali Narayanan at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore (NIMHANS) seeks to inquire into the mental health status of prisoners sentenced to death in India. CALL FOR PAPERS JOURNAL OF LAW AND PUBLIC POLICY [JLPP] 2017

JLPP is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary Journal, published by the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru. JLPP aims to be a forum that encourages and engages students, Academicians, Administrators, Practitioners and Research Scholars to come together for the cause of continuing Legal education, with special focus on law and public policy.

Call for Papers Special Issue on Uniform Civil Code

Article 44 of the Constitution of India provides that; “The state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India”. In the landmark Shah Bano case, the Supreme Court regretted that Article 44 of the Constitution of India in relation to bringing of Uniform Civil Code in India remained a dead letter and held that a common civil code will help the cause of national integration by removing disparate loyalties to laws which have conflicting ideologies. Recently, the Law Commission examined the implications of implementing uniform civil code, thereby resurfacing the debate on whether the constitutional mandate under the Directive Principles of State Policy should be made a reality. It has been argued that the personal laws should be replaced and a code on marriage, divorce, succession, custody, adoption and maintenance should be common, governing every citizen.

The JLPP solicits submissions for its fourth issue to be launched in June 2017. Original unpublished research papers are invited in the area of Uniform Civil Code and any of the following sub themes; Common civil code/law v/s Uniform civil code; Uniform civil code: from status to contracts; Uniformity or pluralism; UCC, Constitution of India and Constitutionalism; UCC, Multi culturalism and secularism; The Jurisprudence on Uniform Civil Code; Uniform Civil Code and conflict of Personal Laws; UCC and Human Rights; Gender equality and family law; Uniform Civil Code in Comparative International Law; and any other related themes.

The author/s can make submissions under the following heads:

  1. Scholarly articles and research Papers (5000-8000 words, inclusive of footnotes).
  2. Short Articles (3000 -5000 words, inclusive of footnotes).
  3. Case Comments, Legislative Briefs, Law Commission report/review and book review (1500-2500 words, inclusive of footnotes).
  4. Book Review

The deadline for accepting submissions is March 31st, 2017. Submissions are to be made only in electronic form. The same may be e-mailed to bhatsairam@nls.ac.in (in MS Word format) along with a covering letter addressed to Dr.Sairam Bhat (Coordinator & Chief Editor, Journal of Law and Public Policy,(2017). The covering letter should include the author’s contact information and a short abstract that outlines the main questions or themes addressed in the paper. All submissions will go through an initial round of review by the editorial board and the selected pieces will subsequently be sent for peerreview before finalization for publication. We encourage potential contributors to adhere to a uniform mode of citation throughout the whole work.

With this preamble, the various characters, concepts, deeds and issues are proposed to be discussed in this two days National level seminar on “ CSR : Emerging Trends and Challenges ”

[SpicyIP] Announcing the 5th SpicyIP Fellowship 2017-18!

Itching to write? On an exciting IP topic of your choice? What are you waiting for? Apply immediately to become a SpicyIP Fellow!

Year after year, our fellowship series has attracted some of the brightest minds to the world of IP. We are now pleased to announce the 5th edition of the SpicyIP Fellowship for 2017-18.

SpicyIP Fellowship 2017-18

For those of you new to the blog, the SpicyIP fellowship is a coveted position for those seeking to make a mark in the world of IP. Warning though: it entails a high level of rigour in research and writing! Though great fun as well, given the range of topics covered and the freedom you enjoy in creatively crafting your take on various IP cases and developments.

We are now looking for a fresh set of sharp, passionate and dedicated fellows who can help us grow even spicier this year. Apart from the sheer joy of writing, the selected Fellows will earn a stipend of approximately Rs. 35,000 a year (Rs. 750 per post).

Our journey so far

SpicyIP’s avowed aim is to produce a more transparent, collaborative and productive IP and innovation ecosystem in India. We’ve been working very hard towards achieving this for the last ten years or so (you can read about our conference last year to mark this momentous occasion of our tenth year anniversary).

We say so, albeit with modesty: our efforts have not gone unnoticed. Last year, our criticism of the broad-based John Doe orders was acknowledged and well-received by the Bombay High Court in one of its orders. Recently, we were listed among the top IP blogs in the world here and here! Some of our other achievements can be viewed here.

We now boast a subscriber base of over 5,700 and our blog receiving an average of 1, 43, 000 views per month. Our blog stats too show the growth we’ve had over the years, thanks in great part to our readers who keep us on our toes with their rigorous critique of our posts.

Eligibility

Anybody is welcome to apply. Sex no bar, age no bar, caste no bar, ideology no bar! So long as you are committed to the craft of writing, and possess a keen mind willing to learn and an attitude open to experimenting with fun formats and themes, this is the place for you!

How to apply?

  • The posts must be relevant to the Indian IP landscape even if not directly about an Indian development. If you’re not sure whether your topic will be suitable, you may check with us at <contact@spicyip.com> with “Fellowship Topic Check” in the subject line.

  • Each post must be of a minimum of 900 words and preferably under 1200 words (unless the situation otherwise warrants).
  • Apart from the posts, the Fellows may be required to assist in research. Depending on the load of research, posting requirements may be adjusted accordingly.
  • The fellowship period will begin on March 20, 2017 and run till March 19, 2018.
  • Once the probationary period is over and the fellowship is confirmed, the Fellow will be paid a stipend (approximately Rs. 750 per post). If we receive more donor funding, we will enhance this stipendiary amount.
  • We are also co-branding some of these fellowships. The SpicyIP-ORF Fellowship is one such fellowship and we will blog on this shortly. We welcome other prospective donors and associations/individuals with an interest in IP journalism/research/writing/policy to help us create more co-branded fellowships and attract a wider talent pool to the blog.

  • If the Fellow does not fulfill his/her obligations as set out above or otherwise deemed unfit for the blog during the probationary period, we will not confirm the fellowship.
  • After confirmation of the fellowship, if a Fellow is found to not fulfill his/her obligations at any time during the fellowship period, we reserve the right to terminate the fellowship at any point in time.

ProBono India: Call for Interns & Campus Ambassadors

About ProBono India

We cannot imagine a society without law/rules/regulations. There are various problems in the society and to handle those situations effectively we need proper laws. Law plays very crucial role in social transformation in any country. Looking at various problems in the society, many laws have been enacted to cope up with the variety of situations. There are various laws but many are not aware about those. To address this situation, we need legal awareness activities in the society. On the other side, there are some marginalized people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer for legal advice or filing a case. Legal Aid service is needed to serve these kind of people. Many institutions/organizations have been set up which are engaged in various legal aid/awareness activities, some of these activities are highlighted in different way through different mediums but some don’t come into the limelight.

Looking at these situations ProBono India has been established. ProBono India is mentored by N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore
