What is not covered?

Most costs are covered by the Scholarship but Gates Cambridge does not cover bench fees or the costs of scientific equipment or similar academic resources. The Trust expects such core course costs to be covered by the academic department at Cambridge.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program at Stanford University| Apply by October 14, 2020

One Cohort With Many Backgrounds

Your fellow Knight-Hennessy Scholars will join Stanford from colleges and universities throughout the world, from a wide array of disciplines and professional experiences, and with a breadth of background, belief, and aspiration. This is a multifaceted community united by your curiosity and intellectual vitality, shared potential for leadership, and your humility and kindness.

Graduate Students at Stanford

Nearly 3,000 compelling graduate students enroll at Stanford annually. Next year, up to 80 (growing to 100 over time) will be Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Knight-Hennessy Scholars span all seven schools at Stanford. If you become a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, you’ll be in good company.

All Knight-Hennessy Scholars have to apply to and be accepted by a graduate program at Stanford at the same time they apply to Knight-Hennessy Scholars. Your graduate program will be your primary affiliation, and the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program will provide you with access to an additional community and opportunities tailored to scholars.

To be a Knight-Hennessy Scholar, you submit two applications:

We can select you as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar only if a graduate program admits you to Stanford. The graduate program, however, may admit you to Stanford even if you are not selected as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar.

Submitting Your Graduate Program Application

You should check each graduate program’s website for a sense of what it seeks in candidates. You must meet the requirements for admission to your home graduate program.

Review of Applications are done separately but in parallel

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program communicates regularly with each graduate program throughout the admission process to ensure that we are designating as Knight-Hennessy Scholars only those applicants who each program has determined are among its best.

We review your Knight-Hennessy Scholars application. The graduate program reviews your application to that program. These two reviews take place separately. After reviewing your Knight-Hennessy Scholars application, we share our review with your graduate program. That program also gives input to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program.

Mahindra Humanities Center Postdoctoral Fellowships, 2021-22| Apply by 6th November, 2020

DESCRIPTION

The Mahindra Humanities Center invites applications for one-year postdoctoral fellowships in connection with the Center’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation seminar on the topic of migration and the humanities.

Migration plays as critical a role in the moral imagination of the humanities as it does in shaping the activist vision of humanitarianism and human rights. Too often, the humanities are summoned merely as witnesses whose primary aesthetic and moral values lie in their illustrative powers of empathy and evocation. Yet the intellectual formation of the humanities—their very conception of the nature of meaning, knowledge, and morals—is deeply resonant with the displacement of values and the revision of norms that shape narratives of migrant lives.

We welcome applications from scholars in all fields whose work innovatively engages with migration and the humanities. In addition to pursuing their own research projects, fellows will be core participants in the bi-weekly seminar meetings for both academic terms of the fellowship. Other participants will include faculty and graduate students from Harvard and other universities in the region, and occasional visiting speakers.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Fellows will receive stipends of $65,000, medical insurance, additional research support of $2,500, and (for those not already in residence in Greater Boston) $1,500 in moving expenses. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Harvard for the term of the fellowship.

ELIGIBILITY AND DEADLINE INFORMATION

Applicants for 2021-22 fellowships must have received a doctorate or terminal degree in or after May 2018. Applicants without a doctorate or terminal degree must demonstrate that they have completed all requirements for a terminal degree (i.e. dissertation defense) by August 1, 2021. International scholars outside the United States are appointed under either the J-1 visa (Research Scholar status) or F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training), depending on their circumstances. If awarded a fellowship, the term of appointment for international scholars is September 1, 2021-August 31, 2022. The Mahindra Center reserves the right to cancel awards if the recipient is unable to meet these conditions of completion and visa status.

The application deadline for applicants to submit their materials is November 6, 2020. The deadline for receipt of letters of recommendation is November 20, 2020.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Please apply using our online application.

In addition to biographical and professional information, applicants are asked to submit:

  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A statement of the research project (1,000-3,000 words) that provides a detailed description of what the applicant proposes to do during the fellowship year.
  • One chapter- or article-length writing sample (no longer than 40 pages).
  • Names and contact information of three referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when three letters have been received. Recommendations may be those included in the applicant’s placement dossier, but they must specifically address the proposed research project. Letters should be uploaded to the electronic application.

Please contact Candace Kang with questions about applying for a fellowship.

World Forum for democracy 2020: Call for initiatives

Our societies have been tested by unexpected global challenges in 2020, but all the while humanity’s greatest existential threat looms ever larger. Environmental damage and climate change have not gone away.

They are still poisoning our air, polluting our water, and killing animals and humans alike. Rising temperatures and sea levels are on course to render lands uninhabitable and force people from around the world to leave their homes and rebuild their lives. The time to act is now. Yet recent polling indicates the highest ever recorded levels of dissatisfaction and mistrust with democracy as a system of government.  Its response to a whole series of recent challenges – economic, pandemic, and indeed environmental – have disappointed millions of people. Many are questioning the capacity, competence and even legitimacy of democratic governance to address their greatest needs. The ambition of the 9th World Forum for Democracy is to propose and discuss differing answers to the question of what it really takes to get the job done when it comes to stopping and reversing the devastating damage done to our environment.

The World Forum for Democracy calls for expression of interests in presenting innovative initiatives aiming at solving environmental problems and enhancing democracy from all over the world.

Submissions should be made by answering the questionnaire in the appendix of the call for initiatives and sending it by 30 June 2020.

It also hosts academic workshops bringing together legal scholars, practitioners, and policy experts from the U.S. and abroad. CSJ’s Young Professionals Programme for Legal Empowerment of Fellowship Rs. 25K/Month: Apply by April 30 [Extended]:

CSJ’s Young Professionals Programme for Legal Empowerment of Fellowship Rs. 25K/Month: Apply by April 30 [Extended]:

About the organization:

Established in 1993, the Centre for Social Justice (“CSJ”) is a human rights organisation fighting for the rights of the marginalised and the vulnerable, principally in the sphere of access to justice.

About the Programme:

An aphorism often widely debated in law schools is the idea of ‘law as an instrument for social change’. But there are few who actually work towards using the agency of the law to empower lives and facilitate socio-legal revolutions.

In order to contribute meaningfully as young legal professionals working for human rights, one has to be cognizant of the wide gulf between the law in action and the law as found in statute books, judgments and scholarship.

Therefore, whatever may be the course chosen, a direct/lived experience of poverty and discrimination, an understanding of how things work on the ground and experiencing the practical relationship of law with vulnerability is essential for any lawyer, policy-researcher or legal academician.

The Young Professionals Programme for Legal Empowerment (YPPLE) was started by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) in 2014 with the objective of equipping young legal professionals to become powerful change agents by giving them the opportunity to develop a holistic understanding of how legal empowerment at the grassroots plays a catalytic role in bringing social change.

YPPLE is now entering its sixth year. In the first five years of the programme, CSJ placed 22 young aspiring researchers in its field areas.

The programme allowed these young minds to pursue their true interests, with each individual finding something that they can call their own, be it: a particular sphere of law, a work profile or a social cause they care about.

Many YPPLE’s continue to be associated with CSJ beyond the duration of the programme and are helping CSJ work towards realising its vision for a more just and equitable society.

Programme Details:

A group of about six to eight young legal professionals will be placed for a minimum period of one year in the field where CSJ is implementing its interventions.

A learning/ performance road map will be developed jointly with the selected candidates.

Each individual will spend two-three weeks every month in the field areas and the remaining time will be dedicated towards research and writing, reflections, inputs and capacity building.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the selected candidates will be to:

  • Conduct field-based research on law and policy issues for formulating interventions and creating policy documents.
  • Coordinate training and capacity building programmes and develop training materials.
  • Supervise data collection for research programs/projects.
  • Collaborate/coordinate programmes with stakeholders including representations with various government authorities.
  • Contribute to the advocacy work of the organisation.
  • Organise events to initiate a public debate on issues.
  • Bring in creative approaches and perspectives to the existing work of the organisation.

Eligibility:

  • The Programme is open to young law graduates/legal professionals who wish to pursue a career in the field of human rights as lawyers, practitioners, researchers or academics (work ex 0-3 years).
  • Willingness to engage with field realities, to live in challenging conditions and to travel extensively, are things every candidate must be willing to do.
  • Candidates must above all display a strong drive, motivation and commitment towards working for social change.
  • A fellowship of Rs. 25,000 per month will be paid to the selected candidates. Please note that the Programme is designed as a two-year engagement.
  • At the end of the mandatory one-year commitment, candidates would have the option to either continue working with CSJ or opt out.

Selection Process:

Candidates interested in applying for the Programme must submit an online application here. As part of the online application, candidates are required to attach the following documents:

  • A personal statement of purpose detailing their motivations and reasons for applying to the Programme. Candidates must also be clear about their areas of interest and expectations from the Programme.
  • An updated CV along with details of any similar work experience.
  • Two writing samples on a field/theme related to Human Rights (academic/opinion/analysis essays or papers).

Applications containing the above mentioned documents should be filled in the link here, not above not later than 30th April 2019.

If the link is isn’t accessible send in the following details by email to ypple.csj[at]gmail.com: Your name, email (the one you’d like to be contacted on), your phone number, your permanent address, name of the law College you attended, and when you finish classes and exams (if you are graduating this year) in addition to the above-mentioned documents.

Short-listed candidates will be contacted with further queries and thereafter shall be invited for a two-day selection process at Centre for Social Justice, Ahmedabad.

The final selected candidates will be invited for a one-month probation period. Based on an appraisal of their performance during this month, the organisation will confirm the selection of the candidates into the Programme.

Asia Pacific Leadership Fellowship Program 2019:

Asia Pacific Leadership Fellowship Program 2019:

Program Description:

The Asia Pacific Leadership Program is Experiential, Relational, Transformative, Optimistic, and Impact-oriented.

Each year, approximately 25 Fellows are selected to participate in the APLP and join a highly diverse, active community.  Fellows have at least 5 years of professional work experience and normally 8 to 10. APLP Fellows must have at least a 3 year Bachelor’s degree, and 56% of each cohort will also have completed a Masters degree.  Cohorts typically have representation from over 18 countries and from every type of academic and professional background (as examples: science, business, development, politics, government, civil society, medicine, religious orders, art, finance, academia or research).  The age of participants ranges from mid 20s to mid 40s with an average of 32 years old. There are no citizenship, age, or ethnicity restrictions.

What is the APLP Experience and its time commitment?

Leaders who can successfully navigate change require creative vision and the capacity to chart and act upon that vision. The APLP experience is designed to yield just these sorts of outcomes. Embracing and leading change takes time. The APLP is designed as a 4 month blended program in order to maximize the depth and breadth of learning. The program grows from building an introductory base in the launch week in Asia to applied place-based leadership activities in home settings to the Hawaii residential experience. Each phase of the program has a distinct purpose and connection to the whole. The APLP experience is first and foremost about change.

Together we engage critical processes of change affecting the region now and in the future. By stepping out of specific individual areas of expertise (for example by discipline or country) and developing new analytic and leadership approaches participants come to have changed perspectives. New insights on regional processes are coupled with opportunities to test and develop one’s leadership capacity through experiential work with diverse co-participants.

The outcome of this process is an ability not only to cope with, or understand change, but to lead it.

Application Information:

We are now accepting applications for the 2019 Asia Pacific Leadership Program.

December 16, 2018 – Early Application Deadline
March 1, 2019 – Final Deadline

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Bachelor’s degree – applicants must have at least a 3-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited U.S. College or University or from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad.
  • At least 5 years of work experience
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Asia Pacific region through professional work, study or living experience
  • There are no citizenship, age, or ethnicity restrictions.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Leadership track record in professional, public, and/or personal realms
  • Willingness to engage fully in experiential leadership development training
  • Deep involvement in a specific organization, business or community impact initiative (applicants must explain how, with their home-setting teams, they will experiment with the leadership strategies learned in APLP)

Fully-Funded PhD Fellowships at Department of European, Public and International Law in Belgium, 2019

Fully-Funded PhD Fellowships at Department of European, Public and International Law in Belgium, 2019

We are seeking to fill four full-time, 40-months, fully-funded PhD fellowships as part of the ERC-funded research project “Righting Victim Participation in Transitional Justice” (ERC-2018-STG- 804154). You will primarily be based at the Human Rights Center at the Faculty of Law and Criminology.

The research project is a multi-disciplinary and multi-method study of the effects of victim participation in transitional justice processes. It studies the long-term (and often unforeseen) effects of this participation on victims and victim communities by analyzing how their perceptions of justice and of what their rights are change in response to their participation in transitional justice processes. The cases under consideration are Cambodia, the DRC, Tunisia and Guatemala. The aim is to map best practices that allow for more victim-oriented approaches to and understandings of transitional justice processes.

The project methodology requires that the PhD candidates spend about three months per year in the – post-conflict- country they are studying, to engage in participant observation, carry out interviews, collect documents, do focus groups and set up experimental designs.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • We are looking for mature PhD candidates, ideally speaking with a research degree; and/or experience of doing fieldwork in one of these countries or in other post-conflict settings; and/or who speak one or more of the local languages of the case studies.
  • Our working language is English.
  • DESCRIPTION OF THE BROADER RESEARCH PROJECT
  • The question of how to serve justice, facilitate peaceful transitions and empower victims of past large-scale abuses is about as old as the field of transitional justice itself. Increasingly, academics and practitioners are turning to participatory approaches as a promising way to make advances regarding each of these issues. An oft-cited benefit of victim participation in transitional justice processes is that it allegedly increases the legitimacy of these processes by rendering them more locally relevant, and that it empowers participants and turns them into ambassadors of the justice process.
    However, little is known about how to organize this participation in practice or under which conditions alleged benefits (for individual victims-participants or for society at large) are likely to materialize. As a result, participation is often organized in an ‘add-victims-and-stir’ way with little critical reflection about potential unforeseen or long-term effects.
  • Because formal and informal transitional justice processes often face significant practical, financial and political constraints, it is crucial to better understand how participatory approaches can be developed in ways that contribute to a positive and lasting legacy, especially in a world where a vast number of societies is emerging from violent conflict, and where failure to engender durable justice and peace may lead to more instability and ultimately violence.

The main objective of this project is therefore threefold,

  • (1) to conduct a systematic empirical analysis of the scope, nature and role of victim participation in transitional justice processes,
  • (2) to develop the critical victimology framework that is currently missing, and
  • (3) to establish how this framework can be used to conceptualize victim participation in ways that contribute to transitional justice’s goal of engendering just, stable and secure societies.

A multi-disciplinary approach, rooted in legal studies, social psychology, political science, public administration and anthropology is proposed, which allows for a multi-dimensional understanding of these issues, both in academic and in practical terms. The research findings from this project will have the potential to enhance the stability of the global society by creating scientific results and turning them into measurable impact. They will provide policy-makers with empirically supported expertise on pressing policy issues, and, because of the project’s attention to international institutions as well as local contexts, findings will enrich our scholarly understanding of the interaction between these policy levels and apply to many post-conflict settings worldwide.

Profile of the candidate

In order to be eligible, applicants must

  • hold a master’s degree in law, social and political sciences, anthropology or a related discipline;
  • have obtained their degree at the time of application or demonstrate convincingly that they will have that degree in hand by July 1, 2019;
  • be fluent in English as their working language and as their primary publication language;
  • spend longer periods of time abroad for fieldwork and participate in international conferences.

Furthermore, applicants who meet the following conditions will be ranked higher during the assessment procedure

  • good knowledge of the field of transitional justice, victim-oriented approaches or related fields relevant to the project;
  • good knowledge of (at least one of) the other language(s) relevant to the preferred case study;
  • experience with fieldwork, ideally in post-conflict settings, or specifically in one of the four case studies;
  • experience with either ethnographic methods (such as participant-observation, interpretive research design); large-n analysis or legal analysis – and ideally a combination of these;
  • pre-existing networks relevant to the research and fieldwork.

In addition to these project specific elements, we expect candidates to

  • have the ability to work independently and in a team;
  • have excellent academic writing/presentation skills;
  • contribute towards the general well-functioning of the team;
  • have some social media experience, or interest therein;
  • work in a meticulous way and be able to manage deadlines.

How to apply

To apply, please send us:

  • A cover letter outlining how your professional and research experience is relevant for this project, your motivation, and which case study you wish to be considered for
  • a detailed CV (including publication list if available)
  • a transcript of your degree(s)
  • If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.
  • a ‘Certificate of equivalence’ is required for diplomas awarded outside the European Union (This can be requested via http://www.naricvlaanderen.be/en).
  • two letters of recommendation, and a writing sample on a related topic (10.000 words maximum, in English, ideally an academic or research paper).
